Let me tell you why I want to be an Outsider. I think we’re living in a time of grand hubris of a group of narcissists who think they can bend society according to their vision. I call them The Meddling Class. Time and again their schemes end in wealth destruction, war, and ruin, and yet they keep promising “this time will be different.” Their reckless central banking, sovereign debts, cyber spying, wars, and creeping technocratic socialism have disfigured economies and financial markets and threaten peace, prosperity, and progress.
The Meddling Class along with their acolytes and dependents are the Insiders. Insiders love their system. They want more of it. More of their unconstrained vision.
But I think the Insider system is unravelling under the weight of economic stagnation, political illegitimacy, technological disruption, and the democratisation of knowledge. As this system atrophies, I expect its huge distortions to correct in intense, uneven but ultimately positive ways. This presents significant risks and opportunities. Our task is to stay wide awake to both.
So what does it mean to be an Outsider? To me, it means not drinking the Kool-Aid. It means recognising what’s at stake and figuring out how to thrive in a synthetic system, and find the authentic. It means not swallowing the narrative or the noise or the pseudo-theory that passes for insight among the herd. It means not being played by the system. It means being alert and nimble, and not succumbing to status quo tunnel vision. It means reformation – starting with yourself. It means being on the right side of history.
The Macro Outsider is a journal about thinking and living as an Outsider, about inoculating yourself from false narratives, about finding authenticity, and about navigating risks and opportunities in a fluid world order.
Become an Outsider and make the next Renaissance.
